How To Play Online Baccarat

This comparing card game is played between two hands. One belongs to the player and the other belongs to the banker. Each round of play in online baccarat is called a coup. A coup has three possible outcomes. Either the player has the higher score, the banker has the higher score, or the player and banker tie.

How It All Began

Baccarat is an old game with a long global history. This has resulted in many variants on the traditional style of the game. The most popular game variations are punto banco, chemin de fer, and baccarat banque. Each has variations on another’s baccarat rules. When playing punto banco a player’s moves are controlled by the cards that the player has been dealt. When playing chemin de fer or baccarat banque the player has the ability to make their own gameplay choices.

The origins of baccarat are a point of contention. There is a lack of clarity as to whether the game originated in France in the 19th century or was brought to France by Italy where it originated near the end of the 15th century. In either case, the British brought the game to New Zealand.

Online Baccarat House Edge

As with any online gambling game, the winning odds are in favour of the house, or in the case of baccarat, in favour of the bank. The online baccarat house edge does not often drop below 1 percent. Players often claim that certain strategies help them tweak the house edge but expecting to lower it is not how casino games based on chance and luck work. The goal is always to have fun and understand that the online baccarat casino exists to make a profit in exchange for providing you with top-tier entertainment.

Online Baccarat Rules

Learning how to play baccarat is as simple as understanding a few key rules. While there is a world of variation available, some key rules that govern the game. Learn how to play online baccarat and make the most of your opportunity to win big!

Step 1

Kiwi baccarat players can bet on either hand in the game. That means that they can bet on the player’s hand or on the banker’s hand. All online baccarat bets are placed before the cards are dealt to the player and the banker.

Step 2

Understanding how the cards are dealt to the players is the next important part of learning how to play online baccarat. Two cards are dealt to each player: the player and the banker. The player’s first card is placed face up and the bankers first card is placed either face up for face down, depending on the variation of baccarat being played. Following that, another card is dealt to the player and then the banker. That is the first round completed.

Step 3

Next, make sure that you know the point total of both sets of cards. Tens and face cards are each worth 0 points. The remaining cards are worth face value. Meanwhile, the ace is worth 1 point. If your cards reach a total that is more than 10, then the second digit of that total is the value of your hand.

Step 4

Now that you are underway playing baccarat brace yourself, because the game could be over already! If the point total of the first two cards dealt is 8 or 9 for the player or the banker, then the game is over because that constitutes a natural win. Any bets that have already been made are paid out at this point.

Step 5

If no one has a natural win, then a third card is dealt to the player provided that their hand totals 0-5. If the initial hand totals 6 or 7 then the player stands.

Step 6

Now it is the banker’s turn for a third card. Pay attention Kiwis, because things get a little more complex at this point. If the player stands (remember, that means that they have a 6 or 7 hand), then the banker draws another card provided that their hand is 0-5. If the banker also has a hand of 6 or 7 then they too stand. Essentially, all remaining hands depend on the third card that the player drew.

  • If the player’s third card is a 9, a 10, a face card, or an ace, then the banker draws if they have a 0-3, or the banker stays if they have a 4-7.
  • When the player’s third card is an 8, then the banker draws a card if they have a 0-2, and the banker stays is they have a 3-7.
  • If the player’s third card is a 6 or 7, then the banker draws a card if they have a 0-6, and the banker stays if they have a 7.
  • When the player’s third card is a 4 or 5, then the banker draws a card if they have a 0-5, and the banker stays if they have a 6-7.
  • If the player’s third card is 2 or 3, then the banker draws if they have a 0-4, and the banker stays if they have a 5-7.

Step 7

That’s it! It is time to count the winning hand. This is the hand that totals closest to 9. It is possible to tie in baccarat if both the player and the banker have a 6 because the player had to stand on a 6 and the banker also has 6. In this case, neither hand can win or lose. In some baccarat games, you can bet on the banker’s hand which means that a commission can be paid. It is a way for a player to insure their hand.

Types of Baccarat Online

online baccarat nz

Free Baccarat Online

Playing free baccarat online is a popular choice for players interested in learning more about the game of online baccarat without betting any real money NZD. Free online baccarat is played in the same way as real money baccarat except there is no betting on the outcome of the hand. Experienced NZ players also enjoy playing free baccarat online because it gives them an opportunity to hone their online baccarat skills. As you now know there are a few rules to remember when it comes to the game of baccarat, so playing free baccarat online is a good way to learn every detail without the risk of losing any NZD money.

Real Money Online Baccarat

Playing online baccarat for real money NZD kicks the online baccarat experience up another level. Kiwi players love getting amongst the action and placing a few cheeky bets on either the player or the banker. Watching the cards turn over gives a whole new meaning to edge of your seat when you play baccarat online for real money. Baccarat has been popular at New Zealand brick and mortar casinos since the first casino was formed. Now that NZ players can play baccarat online for real money it is like a door of possibility has opened. There is nothing holding back players that do not want to be stuck inside a casino. Online baccarat real money can be won anytime, anywhere.

Live Baccarat

For the Vegas experience, Kiwis are flocking to play live baccarat online. Most online gambling sites offer live baccarat as a part of their game selection. Live baccarat online is a live casino gaming option that promises an epic experience and all the glitz and glamour of the brick and mortar casino experience. Real-life dealers are live-streamed to your computer or mobile device from famous casinos and live studio located around the world. Better yet – Kiwis can trade banter with other players and the live dealers while trying their luck at live baccarat. Now we’re talking a language that New Zealand gamblers can get on board with! You may choose to dress up in a tuxedo and live out your James Bond fantasies (no judgment here) or you may choose to rock slippers and stubbies. Whatever you choose to wear, live baccarat online is ready when you are.

Variations of Online Baccarat Games

Punto banco

This is the most popular style of baccarat game in the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Macau, and New Zealand. Most often Kiwi players will see this game of baccarat named, quite simply, baccarat.

When playing punto banco online baccarat the casino is the banker at all times. In this capacity, the casino commits to playing both hands. This is in contrast to historic baccarat rules where each hand relies on the player or banker making a choice to draw. In punto banco the draw adheres to fixed drawing rules known as ‘tableau’. Adhering to this rule, the player (punto) and banker (banco) act as designations for each hand dealt. In this scenario, the banker lacks an association with the house and the player does not have an association with the bettor.

Online baccarat burning cards

When the cards are dealt the dealer burns the first card by placing it face up and then based on the burnt cards numerical value, the dealer burns that same number of cards face down. Now that the game is underway, two cards are dealt face up to each hand during each coup. The player is dealt first, then the banker, and so on. The standard baccarat rules apply from here on out with regard to drawing third cards.

Punto banco tableau

Player

Draws a third card is they have a total of 0-5. Stands if the total is 6 or 7.

Banker

  • If the player stood, then the banker adheres to the player’s rules and draws if their hand is 0-5 but stands if their hand is 6 or 7.
  • Provided that the player drew a third card the following rules apply to the banker:
  • If the banker’s total is 0-2 the banker draws a card
  • When the banker’s total is 3, the banker draws a third card unless the player’s third card was 8
  • If the banker’s total is 4, the banker draws a third card provided that the player’s card was 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7
  • When the banker’s total is 6, the banker draws a third card provided that the player’s third card was a 6 or 7
  • If the banker’s total is 7, the banker stands

Once the croupier calls the final totals and the winning hand, all winning bets are paid out. It is possible to tie when playing online baccarat and this happens if the player and the banker have the same value at the end. In this scenario all tie best are paid out. Any bets that were placed on the player or banker remain active for the next game.

Chemin de Fer

A popular French variation, chemin de fer, originated in the late 19th century.  Cheimin de fer uses a total of 6 decks of cards, shuffled together and is quicker than the original baccarat game. This is good news for Kiwis who love a quick online casino game with a swift win or lose outcome.

Each game, a player is designated at the banker. This player is the dealer as well. The banker best the amount they want to wager at the beginning of each round. The next player then announces if they will go against the entire current bank with a matching wager, and so on through the players. This is called going bank. Only one player can go bank, but if no players choose to go bank the players simply make their own wagers in turn.

Cards are dealt

When play begins the banker deals 4 cards face down. Two of the cards are for the banker themselves and the other two are shared by the players. The player that has made the highest wager represents the group of players. Both the banker and the player then look at their cards. If either player has an 8 or a 9 the hands are immediately turned face up for a comparison. In the instance that neither hand has an 8 or a 9 the player can choose to accept a third card or refuse a third card. This card will be dealt face up. If the players hand totals 0-4 the player will draw a third card. If the hand totals 6 or 7 they will stand. The banker then takes their turn and chooses whether to accept or refuse a third card. The cards are then turned face up and compared.

A winning hand in online baccarat

The player’s hand wins when it exceeds the banker’s hand. In this case, each player that made a bet receives their wager back and a matching amount from the bank. The next player then becomes the banker and a new game commences. If the banker’s hand exceeds the player’s hand, then the banker had won. In this scenario, the players wagers are placed in the bank. If the outcome is a tie, then all wagers are held for the next hand to be played.

Baccarat en Banque

 Baccarat en Banque

This variation of online baccarat is played with 3 combine card decks. The banker plays a more consistent role and is expected to remain the banker until all the cards have been dealt. Of course, the banker may retire but often does not when playing baccarat en banque.

To commence playing online baccarat NZ, the bank puts up an auction. This means that much like chemin de fer the player with the largest wager becomes the banker. The banker deals three cards. One to the player on their right, another to the player on their left, and the final card to themselves. The banker continues to deal another three cards in the same way. All players on the right share the right-hand-side player’s cards, while all players to the left share the left-hand-side player’s cards. Chemin de fer rules apply to winning as well as dealing a third card.

Going Bank

Any player has the right to go bank. The first option to go bank is offered to the player on the right of the banker, then to the player on the banker’s left, and so on. If players on the opposite side both go bank, they share the result. Players can go bank on a single hand or on two hands separately with ½ the stake going on each hand. A losing player can go bank up to 3 times before they are blocked from going bank. If a player chooses to hold the bank they must play out a hand. After that they can retire when they choose. Subsequent players wanting to go bank must start with the same amount that the retiring player wagered.

Super Pan 9

Baccarat is designed for the Kiwi player searching for a simple online baccarat game. When playing Super Pan 9, the banker stands on 7, 8 and 9, while the player stands on 6, 7, 8, and 9. Super Pan 9 operates similarly to traditional online baccarat in that all players are attempting to get as close to 9 as they can. Players are unable to go bust when playing Super Pan 9, just as when playing traditional baccarat because if a player goes over 9, the 10 is subtracted from the total. The difference is that Super Pan 9 players are dealt 3 cards from the beginning. With those 3 cards, players must choose whether to hit or stand. The commonly understood practise is that if a player has 0-5 they hit, while a player with 6 and over generally chooses to stand.

Three Card Baccarat

This is a new online casino game that is not yet commonly available. It is a game designed with simple rules for all players to have a go and enjoy. The scoring ad card values used in the game is the same as traditional baccarat. The aim of the game is also the same. Gamblers must guess who will have the highest value hand, the player or the dealer. A key difference is that a tie is less likely in 3 card baccarat because this online baccarat game requires the number of face cards to be equal for a tie, as well as the value of the hand.

Once the bets have been placed, 3 cards are dealt to the player and the dealer. The fact that no further cards are dealt is a key difference from traditional online baccarat. The points for each hand are calculated and the winning hand is decided. This is a fast game suited to Kiwis who like to play baccarat online efficiently!

When the house wins online baccarat

3 card baccarat online has a bet option called ‘three faces’. This bet pays out if the dealer is dealt 3 face cards. Here is a probability table to show how the bet works:

Points  Pays  Combinations  Probability  Return
3 Faces  16  220  0.009955  0.159276
2 or Less Faces  -1  21880  0.990045  -0.990045
Total    22100  -0.830769

The odds of the bet coming to fruition are 0.83%, which means that a player will win this bet less than 1% of the time. This leaves the house edge at 83%. These are terrible odds and are avoided by knowledgeable Kiwi gamblers.

Baccarat Strategy: Know The Tricks

Avoid betting on a tie. The house edge is poor when it comes to a tie wager in any variation of online baccarat and this is bad news for New Zealand punters.

Remember that Kiwis player baccarat online for fun. Online gambling is a form of entertainment, not a way to make money.

Trial for free baccarat first. Once you have mastered the rules and understand the game, level up to play for real money baccarat with NZD.

Play within your bankroll. Make sure that you have enough NZD funds before commencing a game of online baccarat. This will make sure that you stay within your budgeted bet amount and have a great time playing baccarat online.

Online Baccarat – Kiwi Style

online baccarat nz

Baccarat Through The Ages

The British brought baccarat to New Zealand when they arrived, but its origins began well before that. There is debate as to whether baccarat originated in France or was introduced by soldiers returning from the Franco-Italian War, in which case it originated in Italy. Regardless, French nobility revelled in the game since the 19th century. It was often played in private gaming rooms until gambling was legalised in France in 1907. Baccarat banque is the earliest recorded variation of baccarat. This was later joined by chemin de fer. Later again, baccarat punto banco was developed as a modern variation of the game and this variation is most commonly played today.

Why Kiwis Love Baccarat

Two words: James Bond. New Zealand baccarat players often try the game because they have watched Ian Fleming’s James Bond play it in Casino Royale. The book so extensively relies on the game that Fleming included a summary of the game for people unfamiliar with it. Several James Bond moves have also featured the game being played by the debonair hero or his nemesis.

Kiwis also love playing baccarat online because it offers a welcome break from the pokies. NZ players often take their pokies break at the baccarat table to challenge themselves. Baccarat is a relatively straight forward game but remembering the various outcomes and rules does require some exercise of the brain.

Some New Zealand online baccarat players focus exclusively on playing live baccarat for the Vegas or Monaco experience. Real-life dealers and real-time banter with other players, the banker, and the croupier make this an appealing online baccarat option for chat-happy Kiwis.

Why Play Baccarat Online

There are plenty of reasons why online baccarat players choose to play online as opposed to in a brick and mortar casino. From the freedom to play wherever they want, whenever they want, to the lack of a dress code. It is safe to say that online baccarat is a dream come true for many Kiwi gamblers.

  • Play wherever you are when the mood strikes for a flutter.
  • Online baccarat is available to play at any time of the day.
  • There is no dress code to play baccarat online – although you are welcome to dress up!
  • You can play free baccarat online to learn the rules without risking NZD.
  • Kiwi players can play online baccarat for real money NZD if they choose to.
  • Baccarat is fun! Kiwis enjoy this ‘thinking players’ game.
  • Online baccarat is fast-paced, and players get results quickly.

Final Thoughts

Online baccarat is ideally suited to Kiwi gamblers. First, there is the fact that it is James Bond’s favourite game. Second, players can wear whatever they want when they play baccarat online. Third, online baccarat can be played on your daily commute, at break times, and any time you are bored. Fourth, all you need is a wifi signal or data to play baccarat online. Fifth, and this is the last but not least reason that baccarat is ideally suited to Kiwi gamblers, online baccarat can be played for free or for real money NZD. We are talking exciting wagers and big wins!

FAQ

What are the odds of winning at baccarat?

As with all casino games, online baccarat is in favour of the house which has a varying house edge depending on the variation of baccarat being played and the online casino that you are playing at. What is important is to focus on the fun that you are having and to play baccarat as a form of entertainment. Understanding that the house will make money in exchange for providing entertainment is generally considered to be a fair exchange!

Why is baccarat popular?

Playing baccarat online is a popular hobby in New Zealand because the game offers quick wins or losses. Kiwis love fast-paced games, and baccarat is no exception. The rules are relatively straight forward and with a little practice, anybody can enjoy playing baccarat online.

What is baccarat gambling?

Baccarat is a card comparison game that allows gamblers to bet on the outcome of the game’s hands. A player (or a group of individual players) and a dealer (or banker) play each other and whoever has the higher hand wins. If players have bet on the dealer winning, they are paid out when the dealer wins. If players have bet on the player winning, they are paid out when the player wins. The game is played with 3 cards each round which results in fast gameplay.

Can you count cards in baccarat?

It is technically possible to count cards in live baccarat and gain an edge over the house edge, as can be done in blackjack. Combined with edge-sorting, card counting can result in a significant edge over the casino. However, this is not recommended as many players have been sued after being caught counting cards.

Can you beat baccarat?

Like any other casino game, baccarat cannot be beaten. Gamblers can experience big wins playing baccarat, but these wins are a direct result of luck being on their side or natural statistical variances that they have no control over.

Should you bet on the banker in baccarat?

In baccarat, betting on the banker is a good betting strategy as this leverages the lower house edge. As a result, the odds of a player that bets on the banker winning money is higher.

How do you win playing baccarat?

Because online baccarat is a game of chance, winning is a result of luck. Baccarat players have no control over what happens in the game. However, adopting good baccarat strategy such as avoiding ties and betting on the banker will give any player the best odds of winning money playing baccarat.
